Blood Compact Monument and Original Blood Compact Site

Thank you for checking out my post. Please visit my new blog https://letsgoady.com/travel/. I am posting there every week about my recent travels and lifestyle. Thank you. XOXO -ady

We’ve reached Tagbilaran by 10:10am, 30minutes late from our expected time of arrival. The airport’s exit is pretty petite, just a place where you can pick up your checked in baggage and space to accommodate the passengers leaving the terminal.

Our group decided to go the Comfort Room however, upon entrance we need to put our bags on the airport scanner. Lazy us, we all backed out. Outside the terminal are piles of people. Most of them are vendors selling souvenir items and delicacies and van drivers waiting for their contact clients. Most of them are holding a paper with your name on it so that you can find them easily.

One of them is Kuya Nilo, our van driver for this day. He’s not just your ordinary driver; he can be your tour guide, photographer, myth and tales teller, history teacher and your personal translator. He could also give you some tips and recommendations like where to eat, where to buy cheap pasalubong, haggle for the hard copy picture prices and most importantly will make your trip fun and memorable. I'm not related to Kuya Nilo or the agency where he belongs to. I just enjoyed his company and is well recommended.

For our first trip, we are heading to Blood Compact Monument. We passed through some establishments like their Secondary level School and State University and their Shoemart Mall counterpart which is Bohol Quality (BQ) Mall. And of course the view of sea side to Panglao.

After some minute, we've reached our first destination – Blood Compact.

The Blood Compact or Sandugo treaty marks the treaty friendship between Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, a Spanish Explorer and Datu Sikatuna the local leader of Bohol.  The both parties were believed to cut their own arm with a dagger, add it on a cup of wine and drink it.

As a tribute, they celebrate the Sandugo Festival during 3rd or 4th Sunday of July. The festival highlights Miss Bohol Sandugo Beauty Pageant and Sandugo Street Dancing. Expect that there were a lot of tourists visiting Bohol by this season. The street dancing is participated by All School in Tagbilaran and Local Government sector.

The monument is placed in a plaza with a good view of the sea side and is made of bronze.

Ka’ Nilo Sayings: The monument is not the original place where the Blood Compact itself happened. Forgot to ask why they placed it on that place. We don’t stay much on that place since it’s already noon and the sun is at its peak. Kuya Nilo became our photographer and took our group picture. I’ve told you, he’s all around!

But wait, the location of the shrine is not where the Original Sandugo happened. The National Historical Institute says that it is in Hinawanan, Loay, Bohol took place. They also give some findings containing why Hinawanan Bay is the original Blood Compact Site.
"  Facts:1. Hinawanan, Loay has a small bay or in Spanish caleta.2. There is a salt-water estuary. 3. A short distance in land from the estuary is already the fresh-water Loboc river. 4. The distance from Hinawanan Bay to Loboc, inside the river is two leagues.5. The distance is 5 leagues to Jagna, Bohol or Canayaon, Garcia-Hernandez which was where the Spanish fleet was drifted ashore in Bohol.6. The direction to the island of Pamilacan and straight ahead to Siquijor and Negros is southwest. The same direction as mentioned in the records.7. From Hinawanan, Loay, Bohol, it is possible to verify that “ two leagues ahead” is a town. 8. At present, there is a land route from Hinawanan, Loay to Loboc town. From Bo-ol, Tagbilaran City, there is no direct land from Loboc, Bohol. 9. Even at present, there are still big trees near the shoreline at Hinawanan, Loay. It can satisfy the record that the Spaniards cut trees for the repair of the flaghip San Pedro. - excerpt from En.Wikipilipinas "

Before leaving the place we are approached by a man selling a picture he has captured with us on the monument. I’m not really sure how or where he placed his camera because I've never notice him taking a shot of us. The picture costs 100 pesos.

The picture is edited with It’s More Fun in the Philippines template that makes the copy interesting. Kuya Nilo said that we can get the picture by 70 pesos, but no luck, the man is so persistent with this price.

adyTips2: Learn how to haggle. I believe they can give their product in a lower price, so don’t be afraid to ask. There’s nothing to lose if you try! But if the vendor is pushy with his price and you really want to get it then I’ll give you the choice this time! Hehe :)
